Group meeting 'Time to get ship shape'

Time to get  Ship Shape”
2017 – Glevum WIs turn to host the Robinswood Group Rally!  What should we do?  I know, we will ask our Members.

One of our members said she knew of someone who could sing – he used to work as a cruise ship entertainer – so that was the birth of our research for the big night.  The committee all agreed that if he could come, we would have a “Cruise” theme.

The date of Thursday 27th July was chosen, the hall was booked, and our entertainer, cruise ship singer Robert Knight was free.  Hooray! First and second hurdles jumped!

The only problem(third hurdle) was that there are only five of us on the Committee – hardly enough people to organise such a party.  But, in true fashion, when all the cards are on the table, our members come up trumps – the “dream team” was ready to go!

All sorted!  No more hurdles thank goodness. We had a volunteer catering team who worked in the galley and cooked the salmon, quiches and potatoes, whipped the cream, smashed the meringues and hulled and chopped the strawberries; a volunteer decorating team who beautifully decorated the hall; and last but not least members of the committee arranged and decorated the tables.  A willing and glamorous “crew” waited to serve their guests.

The invitations had gone out with directions that guests should wear “anything you would wear on a cruise”.  That of course could be anything from a bikini and towel to full evening dress so we waited in anticipation!

After several sleepless nights with the hall beautifully decorated and the stage turned into an idyllic tropical island resort (with boat, palm trees and drinks shack!), we welcomed 128 WI ladies from Glevum, Quedgeley, Severn Vale, Twyver and Hempsted to our event. They all looked stunning and were all very appropriately dressed for their cruise experience.

We had a wonderful night and some of the comments after the event were:  “What a fabulous night, the room looked fantastic, the food was very tasty and Robert Knight entertained us royally”; “he certainly knew how to sing, and how to work his audience of ladies”;  “thanks for a really memorable evening”; “just fabulous” and, “I think that’s the best one we’ve ever had”.   Everything turned out better than we had planned and we all sighed a sigh of relief when it was all over. Wow, what a fantastic night!
